Michelin Star Restaurants in India:
The Michelin stars are a prestigious award for any restaurant across the globe. Started in 1900 to help French drivers find good amenities the stars graduated from one to three by 1933. Each star has a grading, one star signifies “a very good restaurant”, two means “excellent cooking that is worth a detour” and three denotes “exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.” The Michelin stars are updated every year and restaurants vie for the star with their innovative cooking and skills. However, when it comes to Michelin star restaurants in India, it comes as a surprise that Michelin doesn’t publish any guide for India.
India has a diverse food map with tastes varying with every region. The food preferences and tastes also vary when compared to international food tastes. It is a well-known fact that Michelin stars have a bias towards French Cuisine and non-French style food in countries like India indicates towards a shift in the food choices of the people. That, however, is no deterrent towards people who love Indian cuisine whether it is locals or visitors from abroad.
Michelin stars are awarded to the restaurant that is specific to a place and not to branches all over. A gimmick that is being used in India by restaurants to promote themselves. As of now, there are no Micheline star restaurants in India. restaurants that have won Micheline stars abroad and have opened franchises here in India include the following:
- Akira Back, JW Marriott, New Delhi
- Kai, Delhi which specializes in Chinese won a star in London.
- Ziya, The Oberoi, Mumbai
- Hakkasan, Mumbai
- Yauatcha, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore
